During the past 35 years of urbanization in ShenZhen, informal urban space has been decreased more and more. As the starting point of urbanization of ShenZhen, these viable space in the city are declining, and the limited researches are focus on informal space in ShenZhen.Masses of ordered city planning by development firms has leading ShenZhen far away from its original direction from the starting point.
The crowdsourcing research project, "My City", launched by Retumu with architects, urban planners, urban scholars, artists and IT engineers to do spontaneous researches of informal space in Shenzhen, such as urban villages, spontaneous / temporary buildings, marginal communities which are ignored by mainstreaming urban studies, to explore the new methods and methodology to understanding the magical social and economic transformation of ShenZhen in her first 35 years.
Some unique original researches have come out in this project. The urban archeology project, Rashomon in GangXia "is one of them, whichhas collected all kinds of literatures in files, pictures and videos more than 550,000 words, which has attracted ten more research groups from Sheffield University in UK, Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia in Spain, Shen Zhen University, and Information Center of Urban Planning Land & Resource Commission of Shenzhen Municipality to join the project. This project is crowdsourcing and spontaneous participation, to represent the urban context of FuTian CBD around urban villages in GangXia by research literatures, drama, novel, documentary and VR interaction device. The exhibition of "My City" would bring new landscape back the informality participation of urban dwellers in informal space, through historical, social and technological perspectives to the audience to reliving the understanding of ShenZhen.
To present the key researches, such as "New Utopia: The Babel Village, By Di Fang, and" SuperMicro City "by Fan Wen," My City "uses cutting edge art styles, focus on comprehensive openness and spontaneous participation of city dwellers to city informality studies in ShenZhen.
Virtual Reality Interaction Device: Flying over ShenZhen
Base on researches of urban archeology project, "Rashomon in GangXia", Retumu worked with ShenZhen Public Art Center, Emax Technology and ShenZhen Municipal Planning & Land Realestate Information Center, using urban simulation data, to do this VR interaction device which would unveil the transitionary informal production of space, architecture, social networking and life styles in urban villages of GangXia through diachronic and synchronic virtual travelling.
