The two video clips describe two very different urban perceptions, one being subtle and fragile and the other one being deep and profound. There are some emerging poetic elements in the video titled The Bridge and The Nearby Scenery taken by ZHANG Jungang, in which he tactfully captured the subtle yet timid substances of colors filled in air. One, when gazing at the rather static sceneries, will be immersed
in them. It seems that the beautiful moments during twilight will disappear in a flash. On the other hand, the video taken by ZHANG Zhizhou that is titled Documentary of Rainstorm, shows lightless scenes. Fragments captured in rainstorm and lightning at night are colorless. The sound of rain and solitude imagination is all that a viewer can get from it. The work Documentary of Rainstorm, completed by Zhang Zhizhou with a camera commonly seen in periodic offices that is placed on ledge and set on “automatic” , captures moments of a rainstorm night. With the setting of the camera defined by the parameters and the physical characteristics of image sensors, lightning is turned into abstract white blocks of light while the dark night has become flowing spots of colors. Nothing else indicates that it was a rainy night except for the sounds of thunders and raindrops. I took the chance of the raining night to show how a camera, which is a simple mechanical product, demonstrates its “linguistic skills” in the process of recording.
