The idea for the URBAN STRATA exhibition departs from our fascination for the urban villages in Shenzhen. We are interested by how some of these villages evolved from small clan-based rural communities into the current state of urban villages, alongside the rapid expansion of Shenzhen, while others become swallowed up by the expansion. As cities become more and more efficient and economized, they also become more similar at the same time. The whole experience becomes more scripted and predictable. In contrast some of the urban villages like Shui Wei seem to act off script, being able to retain its own characteristics and nurturing diversity. Our goal is not so much to use this exhibition as a vehicle to share our research on Shui Wei Village, but rather we have tried to infiltrate the exhibition into Shui Wei Village to exaggerate the banality of daily life or in disguise. With this act of infiltration, we try to reveal the ingredient that gives Shui Wei Village its diversity and intensities and these in contrast to the mainstream beloved, well-scripted office parks, residential complexes, shopping malls and quasi-public spaces.
The exhibition includes:
1) The first real-life architectural timeline tour in urban village
2) A 300m-long exhibition and public event furniture
3) Interventions/installations at different locations n the village
4) Events like the Shuiwei Food Festival, forums & student workshops.
